Summer Intern Spotlight: Jack Horrigan

Jack is a rising senior at Georgetown’s Walsh School of Foreign Service majoring in International Politics and, currently, CTWAC’s Education Assistant! In his free time, Jack loves reading, playing sports, trying new foods and traveling (of course!). We are so happy to have you on board, Jack!

Global engagement is important because the easiest way to make change is to mobilize people for it, and that requires knowledge.

JACK HORRIGAN

1. When and why did you first show interest in global affairs?
I first had a string interest in global affairs in high school. I had a really fantastic teacher and mentor in the history department, who encouraged me to get involved in Model UN and other global affairs-oriented activities. She also helped me and some classmates start a Global Forum club that met weekly to promote student interest in and dialogue on international issues. I’m now an International Politics major in college, so you could say I’ve never looked back.

2. Do you have a particular area of interest within global affairs?
I am particularly interested in security issues, but that always wraps into other issues like development so I tend to cast a wide net. Most of my focus has been on the Middle East, but I also love to learn about Latin America, especially because the history of that region is so intertwined with the history of the United States.

3. What do you do at CTWAC?
I help Nicole, the Education Director at CTWAC, with putting together the Model UN program. Most of my work focuses on writing the Topic Guides for the conference, which is great because I get to research lots of diverse issues in global affairs!

4. What do you do in your free time?
I love to read in my free time – novels, memoirs, history books – anything that sounds interesting. I enjoy running, swimming, and soccer, and love trying new food. I have a passion for travel, and I am always looking for my next adventure!

5. Why do you think that global engagement is important?
Global engagement is important because the easiest way to make change is to mobilize people for it, and that requires knowledge. Once people have an understand of the world around them, it becomes easier to realize what the problems are, get involved, and work to solve them.

6. Do you have any tips on how to get involved in global affairs?
The most important thing to do to get involved is to read and learn about what is going on in the world. Check out the international section of the newspaper or follow international news sources on social media. For students, a great way to get involved, and encourage yourself to stay involved, is to find a student group on campus that is dedicated to foreign affairs. Everything is better when done with friends!
